Riverside Eye Center providing eye care and eye wear for Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington, OH, Hilliard, OH, and Dublin, OH.
Memorial Day is upon us and the weather report is calling for abundant amounts of sunshine. Many of you will be enjoying your free time around water. Some may take in an athletic event. While others will be outside doing yard work, excersing or just enjoying the weather. To maximize your outdoor experiences you should make sure to wear a good pair of sunglasses. What makes some sunglasses better then others? It is not necessarily the price tag. The two things that you want to look for on the next pair of sunglasses that you purchase it that they have UV protection and Polarized lenses. The uv protection is important because it can stop harmful uv rays that can cause damage to the eye. Polarized lenses will help eliminate that annoying glare that comes off of horizontal surfaces (i.e. pool. road surface, cars). Both will help to protect your eyes and enjoy your activity more.
If you have any other questions about sunglasses or eyewear in general please do not hesitate to stop by Riverside Eye Center or visit our website, http://www.riversideeyectr.com/ for more information.

New Years Resolution
Riverside Eye Center providing eye care and eye wear for Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington, OH, Hilliard, OH, and Dublin, OH.
As the new year starts many of you will be making resolutions. Most people’s resolutions revolve around making healthier choices in their life. These can be from exercising more or eating better. I would agree that these are great goals to start and hopefully maintain for a lifetime of good health. My question and challenge to you would be ……..what are you doing for your ocular health?
Now some of you may be thinking what does that even mean……ocular health? So many of us think of ocular health as just wearing glasses or contacts, and making sure we maintain/update our prescriptions for those devices. There is much more to ocular health though. How do you know you don’t have dry eye or allergies? How about more serious conditions like macular degeneration or glaucoma? And for those diabetics out there are you getting your eyes checked regularly.
So while you are going about making your new year’s resolutions don’t forget to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor. After all the best type of care is preventative care.

What is your Christmas wish this year?
Riverside Eye Center providing eye care and eye wear for Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington, OH, Hilliard, OH, and Dublin, OH.
Most of you have already made your Christmas wish for this year, or perhaps some of you are still giving it some thought. Since the big day is just around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss what some of your Christmas wishes might be. With the constant reminders of the holidays from Christmas music playing on just about every radio station and Christmas decorations in every store and shop window, one cannot help but think about that list that has been accumulating all year long.
For some it may be the latest electronic device and for others it may be simply to be home with their loved ones this year. Regardless of what has landed upon your list, we all in some way wish and hope that it will somehow arrive on Christmas day. This is the point of a wish list after all isn’t it?
How about this year we dare to be different, and instead of creating a wish list for ourselves let’s create a wish list for someone else. Could you imagine if we put our energy into thinking of others how very merry our Christmas day could be?

FSA and HSA
Riverside Eye Center providing eye care and eye wear for Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington, OH, Hilliard, OH, and Dublin, OH.
2011 has flown by and December is finally upon us. Many of you have flexible spending accouts (FSA) or health savings accounts (HSA) with money left on them and nowhere to spend it. The optometrist's office is a great place to take that money. Why you ask? It is one of the few places that you can use those accounts to buy yourself something fun. That is unless you consider having exams, shots, therapy or purchasing medication fun.
These accounts can be used to purchase contact lenses, eyeglasses and sunglasses. And unlike your vision insurance you do not have to have a prescription placed in those sunglasses. They can be plano lenses (which is optical talk for not having a presciption in them).
So rather then waste the opportunity visit our office and find a christmas gift for yourself or someone you love, using your FSA or HSA account.

So you're thinking about buying eyeglasses online?
Riverside Eye Center providing eye care and eye wear for Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington, OH, Hilliard, OH, and Dublin, OH.
We live in a world, where more and more consumers are accustomed to shopping for anything and everything online, eyeglasses are one item that should be carefully considered before you click that purchase button. Although online stores often advertise reduced prices, the benefits of choosing a physical optical store far overshadow the “deals” you might score online.
One of the best reasons for purchasing glasses at a physical optical store rather than online is that you have an experienced optician to advise you through the process. Our staff can assist you with the numerous variables you need to consider when choosing the right glasses.
Above and beyond the help you will find at a physical optical shop, you will also be able to try on the glasses prior to buying. Glasses that don’t fit properly can result in pain and frustration and can also inhibit your vision. Also, you don’t get to see what they really look like or how they feel until you have them. To a greater extent than your wardrobe, eyeglasses require proper fit and comfort to work effectively.
Even more than the fit and feel of your glasses, proper eyesight demands accurate PD calculation. The optical center of your lenses gives you the clearest vision, making it crucial to properly determine the pupillary distance, or PD. It can be tricky to measure your own PD, but without it, your lenses won’t be positioned properly in the frames.
While shopping online is often great for other purchases, the case of eyeglasses you’re better off staying with your local optometry center where you can find eyeglasses that are appropriate for you and your lifestyle.

Winter conditions created DRY EYES!!!
Riverside Eye Center providing eye care and eye wear for Columbus, OH, Upper Arlington, OH, Hilliard, OH, and Dublin, OH.
http://www.riversideeyectr.com/
It is very common this time of year for patients to come in for their first eye exam ever. As always I will ask them what brings them in to the office today…….are you having any vision problems? The patient will respond with yeah my vision is blurry all the time. So we dig deeper……any itching, burning or tearing? To which the patient responds yeah they do burn and tear at times.
Does any of this sound familiar? What is going on? Why did I suddenly notice this blurry vision? Well the answer is quite common. A lot of patients that have never experienced vision problems will notice some blurry vision this time of year. This is usually caused by Dry Eye. The reason we notice it this time of year is because of the conditions we live in.
My practice, Riverside Eye Center, is located in Columbus Ohio and this time of year (early November) we start to get much cooler air. This cooler air is much drier and as a result affects our body and more specific our tissues. So what do we do when it gets cooler we turn on our furnace…….which dries our air even more. To make the situation even worse the majority of people work in professional office buildings that are typically very dry and within those buildings we work on computers. On these computers we are very focused on the work at hand (or your Facebook account) and as a result we tend to blink less, which means our tears are evaporating and we aren’t refreshing them.
So let’s review: we have dry air outside, heated dry air inside, and decreased blinking, not to mention the typically windy condition we experience here in Columbus.
If you don’t believe me, let s perform an experiment. Sit in front of your computer or your TV. Now hold both eyelids open. How long did you last before you had to blink? It typically takes approximately 15 seconds for your tear film to evaporate………if you didn’t last that long you may need to visit your eye doctor.
The good news is this dry eye can usually be easily corrected. With the use of artificial tears the majority of the cases return to normal. There are other cases that require more assistance with the use of punctual plugs, restasis, fish oil, or other forms of therapy for the dryness.
So if you are noticing any blurry vision maybe your sight is fine and it is just the dryness affecting it. In any case it is always a good idea to visit the eye doctor for a thorough evaluation!!!
